DESCRIBING PEOPLE or WHAT DOES HE/SHE LOOK LIKE?
HAIR: straight, wavy, curly, long, short.
Blonde, fair, dark, ginger, red, auburn, white, grey, (light) brown, black.
He/She wears his/her hair:
• parted in the middle;
• parted on the left/right side;
• combed back;
• done in a knot;
• in plaits.
FACE: thin, round.
NOSE: straight, hooked, flat.
EYES: hazel, dark, green, brown, pale blue.
SKIN: dark, fair, pale.
SPECIAL FEATURES: a beard, a moustache.
HEIGHT (=How many metres?): tall (NOT high), short (NOT low), medium height. How tall is he/she? He/She is 1.60 metres tall.
BUILD/WEIGHT (=How many kilos?): (a rather) plump, stout, slim, thin/slender, skinny, fat. How much do you weigh? I weigh 60 kilos.
GENERAL APPEARANCE: good-looking, pretty, beautiful, smart, elegant, handsome.
USEFUL PHRASES: to take after is used about people from the same family (e.g. Monica takes after her mother.); to look like can be used about anyone (e.g. Sam looks like John Lennon.); to look alike (of two or more people or things) = to be similar to each other in some way.
